Helen Gourlay Cawley was born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia on the 23rd of December, 1946. Cawley managed to reach two singles Grand Slam finals of the French Open in 1971 and the Australian Open in 1977 ending up as Runner up in both matches losing to countrywoman Evonne Goolagong Cawley. Though both the women shared the same surname coming from their husbands, they were however connected in no other way. Helen Gourlay

Helen Cawley was however more successful in the women’s Doubles play where she was the winner of four Australian Open Doubles titles in 1972, 76, and both the events in 1977 (January and December). She was also the Doubles winner in the Wimbledon in 1977 and runner up in 1974. She also ended as a runner-up in the French Open in 1971 and 1977.

Cawley paired with Kerry Harris won the 1972 doubles title of the Australian Open over Patricia Gregg and Karen Krantzcke. The 1976 doubles win came alongside Evonne Goolagong Cawley over Lesley Turner Bowrey and Renata Tomanova.

The Dec 1977 Australian Open winning game was also played with Evonne Goolagong over Mona Guerrant and Kerry Reid. The January Doubles final of the event was won by Cawley paired with Dianne Fromholtz over Betsy Nelson and Kerry Reid. The Wimbledon Doubles win in 1977 came along with Joanne Russell over Martina Navratilova and Betty Stove.

The 1971 French Open ended Cawley as a runner up paired with Kerry Harris lost to Gail Chanfreau and Francoise Durr, the 1977 doubles French open also accounted for Cawley as a runner up paired with Rayni Fox against Regina Marsikova and Pam Teeguarden.

In 1896, the Tennis game was played as a Summer Olympic sport in Olympic Games that were held in Athens. Two matches of tennis men’s singles and men’s doubles were played in Olympic Games Opening. Women were permitted to play this game in 1900 in singles and mixed doubles at Olympic Games. In 1988, it was restored as a medal sport.
