Born Julia Elizabeth Wells on 1st October, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey (UK), also known as Dame Julie Andrews.

The actress and singer is also a successful author and during the 2000 New Year’s Honours Celebration, she was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Career Highlights

Probably best remembered for her musicals like “The Sound of Music”, “Mary Poppins”, and more, Julie began as a singer, and her amazing voice, which could span four octaves, made her an immediate success. She has huge success on stage, screen, in the music industry and as a writer.

She might, perhaps, be considered a true renaissance woman. She was type cast. There can be no doubt about it. Julie Andrews was a musical star in the minds of not only producers and directors, but also of her fans. She had begun on stage, moved to film but not out of that genre.

It was, after all, her amazing voice and pixie-like beauty that sold her films, at least initially. Later, however, she would have opportunities to prove her theatrical capabilities equaled those of her musical ones and she won the world over with her determination to be the best in all areas of her art.

Awards abound in Dame Julie’s collection. She took home the Oscar for Best Actress, the Golden Globe for Best Actress, and the BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer, all for “Mary Poppins” in 1964 and, in addition, her work in the soundtrack of that same movie netted her a Grammy Award.

She also took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role in “Victor-Victoria” in 1982. Julie Andrews was given the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006 and in 2009 she received the UCLA George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement.
