Sanam Marvi the renowned sufi singer was born in Hyderabad Sindh on 17th April, 1986. She chose this genre of music as her father Faqeer Ghulam Rasool was a sufi singer too.
Marvi received her initial training from her father and from a tender age of seven, she accompanied her father to the various dargahs and shrines where he performed.
Later she received formal training under Ustad Fatheh Ali Khan of Gawalior gharana. Although Sindhi is her mother tongue but she sings beautifully in Punjabi, Urdu and Seraiki languages as well.
Marvi’s first television appearance was on the program Virsa Heritage but her performance in Coke Studio made her a star overnight. People were simply impressed with her amazing vocals, her voice throw was awesome and her vocal range incredible.
She is a sensational singer with an exceptional voice that has a distinct quality. Although she has appeared in two seasons of Coke Studio but people still associate her with Raang Laga.
Sanam Marvi has established herself as one of the finest sufi singers in a very short time. She has taken sufi music to the next level and is proud to be known as the contemporary sufi singer from Pakistan. It will not be wrong to call her the ambassador of peace as she has through her singing she has spread the message of love and peace in sufi poetry to the four corners of the world.
Besides singing kalams of the sufis, Marvi has also sung the title songs of various drama serials such as Aye Dasht-e-Junoon, Hazaroon Saal, Kokh, Jahez and Be-Iman; she also sings ghazals and folk songs with equal finesse. She has also done playback singing for Pakistani and Indian films.
Marvi has produced four albums which is no mean feat considering she debuted in 2010. Although she has given live performances in many countries but her performance in Hyderabad India in 2011where she performed with Rekha Bhardwarj is in her opinion the most memorable.
Sanam Marvi has received the Best Singer Award (Sufism University) and the Best Singer Light Music (17th PTV National Awards) for her exceptional singing. She was awarded Tamgha-e-Imtiaz by the Sindh Governer in 2020. She has also won UNESCO Award at 9th International Music Festival.
