Born Margaret Mary Emily Hyra in Fairfield, CT back in 1961, Meg Ryan has enjoyed a great deal of success as an actress over a long career (at least by Hollywood standards) that has spanned more than three decades.

Her early success in romantic films earned her a huge audience and allowed her a few opportunities to show off her dramatic style (When a Man Loves a Woman and Courage under Fire).

Career Highlights

When you think of Meg, your mind immediately rushes to her unforgettable performances in box-office romance hits like, “When Harry Met Sally”, “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail”. Her perky, upbeat smile and lovely, but not intimidating, “girl next door” looks made Meg an instant favorite with moviegoers.

Meg has even made the transition to more theatrical roles. Her complete believability in films like “Sleepless in Seattle” made us fall in love with Meg. While she can, doubtless, act in more dramatic roles, her strength has always been her star power in romantic comedies. Still, as time goes by, we will likely see her cast less often in that sort of role.

If she has a weakness as an actress, it is that her huge success in romantic comedies has made moviegoers and film buffs doubtful of Meg’s ability to play a bad girl, though she has done so.

Like it or not, we all want to see the Meg that we fell in love with on the top of the Empire State Building in the final scene of “Sleepless in Seattle”. While having been nominated three times for Golden Globe Awards, Meg has never won a Globe, an Oscar or any other major film achievement prize.
