James Eugene Carrey was born on the 17th of January, 1962 in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. Carrey commands high-dollar salaries and has his choice of film roles in Hollywood. If, as an actor, Jim Carrey has a list of strengths, they would doubtless include things such as: versatility, wit, charisma, stage presence and an infectious smile.

He has learned the dramatic side of his work in the school of trial and error, starting as a comedian and without the benefit of an actor’s education in college.

Career Highlights

Carrey started out a stand-up comedian and eventually, networked his way into a few bit television roles. Then, he landed the lead in a zany comedy film entitled, “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” that grossed over 400 hundred million dollars worldwide. Since then, it’s been a much smoother ride for Carrey.

While initially known for his wacky comedic work, over the years Carrey has spread his wings and taken flight with several critically acclaimed roles in films such as the “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Truman Show”. His range is broad and his audience appeal seems universal, and unless something changes, Carrey’s career is going to be continuing that forward momentum for some time to come.

Carrey’s work has garnered him much acclaim and no few awards. He won Blockbuster Favourite Actor and Favourite Newcomer Awards for “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” and later for his film “Liar, Liar”. He has racked up a few MTV Awards such as Best Male Performance, Best Villain, Best Comedic Performance, etc.

In addition, he took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor for both “The Truman Show” and “Man on the Moon”. If he has weaknesses, they may be that we’ve got the “funny” Jim Carrey so etched in our movie-going psyches that we have trouble taking him seriously, even in very serious roles. Perhaps that’s why he seems more natural and we are happier, when he’s being silly.
