Born on 3rd July, 1962 in Syracuse, NY (USA), he was christened Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. At age 58, with quite a few blockbuster movie hits under his belt, we all know him better as simply, Tom Cruise. From his debut role in the “Generation X” hit, “Risky Business”, we all recognised the charisma Cruise exuded. What we did not realise was that he could also act.

He went on to prove that, starring in a string of hits that have raked in astronomical box-office receipts, most notably his recurring role in the “Mission Impossible” Series. His off-screen antics and roller coaster personal life do garner a lot of attention, but when he is on screen, he is on target.

Recognised now as much for his talent as a producer and as an actor, Cruise has finally gotten recognition for being more than just another pretty face. His obvious strengths are, of course, the action-packed types of films that he openly prefers. Still, side stepping into dramatic roles is not beyond him.

While some will pick at his rare box office failures as faults, he has not always been the culprit behind the film’s failure. The dismal showing of “Eyes Wide Shut”, starring Cruise with then-wife, Nicole Kidman, is one example.

In 2000, Tom Cruise won the MTV Movie Award for Best Male Performance for his role in the Mission Impossible sequel, “Mission Impossible II”. In 2005, he won the People’s Choice Award for Favourite Male Star, and his films (as of 2009) had grossed of 6.5 billion dollars worldwide.
