The BAFTA Awards:

BAFTA is the acronym for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and is a renowned independent art charity. It does not come under the category of Hollywood film awards but is quite popular nonetheless. The BAFTA Awards are held to acknowledge and celebrate outstanding achievements in films and drama in the past year. The film awards were first held in 1949 with awards being given in three categories. Today BAFTA recognizes achievements in 25 categories. Although BAFTA also acknowledges international work; however, some categories are limited to British cinema only such as the Outstanding British Film, and Outstanding Debut by a British director, Writer or Producer. Similarly, only British films are considered for categories such as British Short Animation Awards and British Short Film Award.  BAFTA was first televised in 1956 with Vivien Leigh the beautiful actress of Gone with the Wind as the host. The statue awarded is in the form of a theatrical mask and was designed by Mitzi Cunliffe, an American sculptor. During the ceremony, tribute is also paid to the people associated with the entertainment industry who passed away in the last twelve months.
